Are you passionate about refugee experiences? Do you want to be part of a project that tells the story of refugee experiences in Nebraska and the Great Plains? This project will focus on writing the story of refugee experiences in Nebraska starting with WWII, with special attention to 1970s, and all the way until today. We will focus how different refugee groups have adapted to their life in Nebraska and the Great Plains, how Lincoln came to be known as the “Refugee Friendly City” and the impact of refugees on Nebraska’s social, political and economic outcomes. This project will culminate in several research articles that will be published as part of a special journal issue focused on refugee experiences in the Great Plains.

Training, Mentoring, and Workplace Community: | I love working with students and helping them engage in research. I enjoy helping students learn how to find information previously hidden or forgotten and write a story. We will likely spend many hours in the archives looking through dozens of boxes of documents trying to piece together a story of refugee experiences in Nebraska. Our time at the archives can be really fun and often leads to wonderful conversations and discussions about the topic at hand. I like to meet with students at least once a week at the archives during which time we go over what they have discovered. During this time we come up with additional questions we plan to answer and will often follow leads based on information we find. A lot of the research can also be done online which makes it easy for students to make their own schedule. I also understand that students are students first and am really flexible with schedules around exams and papers. We also try to have coffee together as a team at least few times a semester where we chat about the project, students interests, career aspirations and plans. This is about more than just research, it’s also about helping students meet their own personal and academic goals while also finding their passion. | |
