As catalysts for positive change, University Housing Sustainability Ambassadors, operating as peer-to-peer educators, will foster a culture of sustainability among students residing in University Housing at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL). Ambassadors will work 5-10 hours per week to educate fellow students on why sustainability is important, how UNL demonstrates its commitment to sustainability, and how students can make a difference by integrating sustainability into the culture of living on UNL’s campus. Through educational and engaging programming efforts including tabling, events, and competitions, ambassadors will cultivate a community of students who are mindful of their social, economic, and environmental impacts and empowered to effect change. In their role, ambassadors will develop knowledge, skills, and experience to help them grow as leaders on campus and beyond.
This hourly position, based in University Housing, is a collaborative effort supervised jointly by University Housing and the Office of Sustainability. The Sustainability Ambassador program will contribute to the achievement of UNL’s institutional sustainability goals outlined in the Environment, Sustainability, and Resilience Master Plan.
Position Responsibilities:
- Engage peers by regularly tabling in high-impact locations within University Housing facilities and across campus. Tabling sessions will focus on educating on effective recycling, highlighting sustainability initiatives, and promoting involvement opportunities.
- Plan and execute sustainability-related events or competitions throughout the semester and collaborate with campus organizations when appropriate.
- Promote and participate in university-wide sustainability-focused events.
- Engage in regular team meetings, one-on-one check-ins with supervisors, and sustainability-specific training sessions.
- Undertake other projects and duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- Sophomore, junior, or senior during the year of appointment
- Minimum of 3.0 cumulative GPA
- Live in a University Housing facility
- Experience and/or interest in sustainability
- Excellent communication skills
- Must be self-starting, detail-oriented, and possess a strong work ethic
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Preferred Qualifications
- Pursing a sustainability related major or minor
- Highly involved student with awareness of local sustainability efforts
- Previous experience working in Residence Life
- Involved with RHA, ASUN, a sustainability related RSO, or other initiative showcasing student leadership
