Unique Shadowing Experiences in Greece
If you are a pre-med, med, pre-pharmacy, pharmacy student, or physician assistant student and are looking for a life-changing shadowing experience.
Philotimo Med Abroad offers shadowing and volunteer experience during your school break while you have the opportunity to explore Meteora and the city of the father of medicine, Hippocrates.
The clinical shadowing takes place at the University Hospital of Larissa and the volunteer program at the community clinic and or refugee camp of the city of Larissa, Greece.
Obtain 25+ hours of clinical observation as you rotate through several clinical departments including some with surgical opportunities.
Participate in helping others at the community clinic or refugee camp.
All hours are observation-only and follow AAMC and BMA guidance for pre-health experiences abroad. Students will also participate in lab research at the Faculty of Health and Sciences at the University of Thessaly. Greek language skills are not required.
During the Program
The actual shadowing experience is the heart of the program. It typically involves orientation and introductions, observing medical procedures, engaging with patients, and reflective practice.
Orientation and introductions familiarize participants with the hospital or clinical setting, including the facilities, departments, and key personnel. Meeting preceptors and staff members help establish a supportive network.
Observing medical procedures allows participants to witness firsthand the intricacies of patient care. From surgeries to consultations, this hands-on experience provides a real-world understanding of medical practice. Interacting with healthcare professionals during rounds, conferences, and informal discussions further enriches the learning experience.
Engaging with patients is an integral part of medical shadowing. Participants learn the importance of bedside manner, empathy, and effective communication in healthcare settings. Assisting with patient care activities, under supervision, offers practical involvement in the healthcare team and fosters teamwork skills.
Reflective practice through journaling experiences and reflections encourages deep learning and self-improvement. Discussions with preceptors and fellow participants provide an opportunity to share insights and gain different perspectives, enhancing the overall learning experience.
