A Peer Career Coach with a Great future

“I wanted to be a Peer Career Coach because it was a great group of people that I was able to work with as a student,” said Adam Whitacre.

Whitacre, a UNL senior majoring in Ag-Economics with a minor in Agronomy, is a Peer Career Coach for the CASNR Career Center.

The CASNR Career Center works with Career Services to provide information on agriculture and natural resources careers, interns, and full-time employment. Adam first paid a visit to the center looking for some resume assistance.

“At that time, I was hardly involved at all on campus and lacked campus involvement. The administrators and Peer Career Coaches were able to tell me which clubs and organizations had meetings that week. Without their help, I wouldn’t have been able to have the experiences I have had,” said Whitacre.

Whitacre, after first visiting as a student, later went on to become a Peer Career Coach himself.

“I wanted to help other students achieve their dream job,” said Whitacre.

Adam has had multiple internships during his time at UNL, many of them resulting from the networking he did at career fairs.

“After attending the career fair my sophomore year, I was able to land an Agronomy Sales Internship with Hefty Seed Company in Wood River Nebraska. Through this internship, I learned about different agricultural practices in central Nebraska as well as herbicide, fungicide, and insecticide applications,” said Whitacre. “Following the career fair of my junior year I had the opportunity to work for Bayer as a Crop Science Sales Intern in Mankato Minnesota. In this experience I had the opportunity to work on my public speaking skills, agronomic recommendations, and customer relations.”

And he hasn’t stopped there! Adam has a position lined up at Syngenta as a Sales Representative post-graduation.

Outside of class and his internships, Whitacre has been involved with intermural sports, the Agronomy Club, SALT company, Bible Study, Agribusiness Club, and the National Ag Marketing Association.
