Kaden Ho is putting his engineering knowledge into action both on campus and on the job. This past summer, he worked as a software development intern for Shyft Solutions in Omaha, gaining hands-on experience in the software industry.

Kaden is entering his third year at UNL and pursuing a degree in software engineering with a minor in mathematics. One of the resources he used to support his professional development was the Job & Internship Search Guide. He used the guide to help tailor his resume when job searching, which helped him land his internship.

“The Job & Internship Search Guide can be very helpful for general formatting tips and finding strong action verbs,” said Kaden.

In addition to utilizing Career Services resources, he has also attended career fairs every semester since becoming a student at UNL.

“Career fairs are a very good way to learn about employers in your field and begin making connections with industry professionals,” Kaden said. “In fact, I found my current employer, Shyft Solutions, through last year's fall career fair.”

This internship has allowed Kaden to explore a range of areas in the software engineering field. Stepping into real-world experience at Shyft Solutions, Kaden used modern web tools to build internal applications that will replace paid subscription services, along with weather apps that will be shown at technology conferences.

“My favorite part of this role is the fact that I can gain skills in many different subsections of the software engineering field, such as cybersecurity, database management, DevOps, and cloud engineering,” said Kaden.

Kaden is also involved in two engineering-related organizations on campus. He is a part of the Engineering Student Advisory Board (ESAB) and an active member of PROTO, a student-led engineering organization dedicated to giving children in Nebraska opportunities to explore robotics, engineering and problem-solving.

Through Kaden's involvement on campus and experience in the engineering field, he feels more confident about what he wants to pursue for a future career.

“When I begin looking for a future full-time career, I will be better equipped to focus on jobs that are more aligned with what I enjoy doing and filter out jobs that aren’t a great fit for me,” Kaden said. “After graduation, I am looking forward to beginning a career in full-stack development.”

By combining classroom knowledge, career resources, campus involvement and hands-on experience, Kaden is gaining the skills and confidence to launch his career in software engineering.
