Alec Gettert, a senior majoring in Graphic Design is finishing up his internship at Career Services. Alec has been a part of the Career Services team for two years as a Graphic Design intern. Since August 2022, Alec has been responsible for creating Career Services’ graphics, signage and creative materials.
“My favorite part of working for Career Services has been both the sheer amount of work I’ve gotten to produce, and the amazing people I’ve gotten to work with. Walking around campus and getting to see all of the things I’ve made for events like the Career Fairs has been such an incredibly rewarding experience, and has set me up for wanting to continue working in roles where I get to see my work like this and help others be aware of the resources offered to them,” said Alec.
When it comes to connections, Alec credits the Career Services’ team for helping him get started in the professional world. He’s learned the ins and outs of career development and planning, thanks to the guidance and support provided by the team.
“Beyond just working with some great folks, it’s been a great experience getting to see the behind the scenes of things like event planning, hiring processes, resource production, and all of that. Learning that behind every professional process is just some people like me has helped me immensely in engaging better and feeling more comfortable in interviews and other formal processes,” said Alec.
As Alec closes out his college experience, he reflects on what truly made his time and experience spent at UNL.
“As a person in a creative degree, I’d say my biggest takeaway is that college is the time you get to have the most fun with your work. While you’ll still have creative freedom in the workforce, nothing beats being given the complete freedom and resources that design classes offer you, so have fun with that if you’re still in school,” said Alec.
Looking back, Alec recognizes how these formative years shaped not only his skills but his approach to creativity. The opportunities to experiment and grow were essential in developing a strong foundation, and he encourages students to fully embrace the chance to push boundaries.
For post-grad plans, Alec has opportunities lined up for graphic design and aspires to work in jobs that positively impact the world and help others in any way possible.
Thank you, Alec, for all your hard work with Career Services. We know that you will go on to do great things!
