Peyton Carpenter is a junior majoring in agricultural economics with a minor in agronomy. Last semester, she attended the Fall University Career and Internship Fair, where she made valuable connections that led to new career opportunities.
Peyton first learned about this event through emails from the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources, and her roommate encouraged her to go.
“I did a good amount of prep before I went because I was a little nervous,” said Peyton. “I printed out physical copies of my resume and looked at the companies attending the fair so I could research which ones I was interested in speaking with.”
Her preparation and courage paid off. Peyton made a strong first impression and was invited to interview for an internship position later that same day.
“I can describe my experience at the career fair as very positive and would absolutely recommend other students go, especially if they are looking for internship positions,” Peyton said.
Later in her job search, Peyton met with a career coach for guidance on using LinkedIn and to discuss her options further.
“My career coach helped me navigate LinkedIn and get in touch with some UNL alumni who were currently working at the company,” said Peyton. “I found it so helpful to go and speak to someone who’s qualified to give advice and guide my decision-making.”
Outside the classroom and career fairs, Peyton is involved in several roles on campus. She is an active member of the Delta Gamma sorority, where she previously served as director of social awareness and now holds the director of DG Dialogues position. She also served as a recruitment counselor during sorority recruitment this past fall and previously worked as a lab assistant for the UNL Soybean Breeding Program.
Ultimately, Peyton accepted an opportunity that fits her interests and supports her future career goals.
“This summer I will be interning at the Nebraska Wheat Board doing communications and outreach,” Peyton said.
