Gavyn Nylander is a junior double majoring in sports media and communication and advertising and public relations. This past summer, she worked as an in-game promotions and entertainment intern with the Round Rock Express.

Round Rock Express is a Minor League Baseball team based in Round Rock, Texas. From May through August, Gavyn spent her summer surrounded by the high-energy atmosphere of Dell Diamond, gaining hands-on experience in live sports entertainment.

“I executed on-field promotions and game-day activities, assisted with event setup and giveaways, and represented the Express throughout the community by distributing marketing materials to local businesses,” Gavyn said.

Through this role, Gavyn strengthened her communication, teamwork, and adaptability skills. She learned how to thrive in a fast-paced environment while effectively multitasking and supporting event management operations. She also had the opportunity to engage with the local community, gaining valuable experience related to her field of study.

Gavyn discovered the internship opportunity through Teamwork Online, a sports-focused job site, and used Career Services to apply with confidence. After attending a resume workshop, she felt that her resume accurately reflected her skills and experience.

“When applying for internships, I had no idea what should be on my resume,” said Gavyn. “Having someone teach us not only how it should be formatted, but what to include, was super helpful. It has made me more confident submitting my resume, knowing I have everything that a future employer is looking for.”

Following her summer internship, Gavyn returned to campus to continue her studies, declaring a minor in hospitality, restaurant and tourism management. She is also an active member of the Gamma Phi Beta sorority and began her next professional opportunity here in Lincoln.

During the fall semester, she served as a recruiting intern with the Nebraska football recruiting team. These experiences have helped define her career interests and future goals.
