“Networking, being able to form a relationship and pitching yourself to others is critical when seeking internships!”

Idaly Del Rello is a junior studying Psychology with an emphasis in Neuroscience on the Pre-Med track. Since January, she has been participating in a fellowship opportunity through Nebraska Appleseed on the Community Assistance Line (CAL).

“I work to support the CAL, which allows community members to call and express any legal or general concerns,” said Idaly. “In my role specifically, I am in charge of helping with the English intakes while also taking sole leadership with individuals who speak Spanish.  I communicate with all the attorneys on staff from varying subsections: immigrants and communities, economic justice, healthcare access and child welfare.”

Idaly has found a source of inspiration through this opportunity thanks to the hands-on experience and individuals at Nebraska Appleseed. She admires the aspect of teamwork and advocacy this organization promotes by uplifting voices in the community, and how she’s contributing to such a great mission.

“I love the work that is being done constantly in this organization,” she shared. “Nebraska Appleseed has some of the most hardworking individuals I know, always looking for solutions and advocacy for all Nebraskans. When they say, ‘we fight for justice and opportunity for all’ they mean it, they are a team no matter where they are whether that's the courthouse, on the streets, in at the Capitol, or in the community they make the voices heard.”

Idaly understands the importance of preparation when it comes to taking steps toward professional development, specifically with Career Services’ resources.

“I have attended Career Conversations, which essentially allowed me to drop in without an appointment to ask questions about potential internship opportunities, while getting acquainted with career topics while finding support from CAS Career coaches. It allowed me to acclimatize with the possibilities that exist while feeling more comfortable being a first-gen student,” said Idaly.

Idaly’s ultimate goal is to become a practicing physician in the U.S., specifically serving in underserved communities where healthcare access is limited. This goal is deeply personal for her.

“My main goal is to one day be a practicing physician in the U.S., and specifically to serve in communities where healthcare isn’t as accessible,” she said. “Having a disability exposed me to the difficulties and challenges individuals with health issues face. I want to be able to sit beside someone during their toughest times and guide them through the journey of navigating their health. I want to make sure they don’t feel alone in those moments.”

Outside of her studies, Idaly is involved in Delta Xi Nu Multicultural Sorority, Inc., the Nebraska Human Resources Mentorship Program, the TRIO Student Advisory board and Translational Cognitive Neuroscience and Memory Lab research. Off campus, Idaly is on her neighborhood food pantry’s leadership team and teaches ESL at the Asian Community and Cultural Center.
