Asian Community and Cultural Center:  Mission: The Asian Community & Cultural Center supports and empowers all refugees and immigrants through programs and services and advances the sharing of Asian cultures and the other cultural heritages of our clients with the community at large. Vision: Immigrants in Lincoln and surrounding areas will have access to the resources and support they need to lead better lives.

1. Internship: Citizenship Program Intern; Supervisor: Joy Oyebefun

Project Description: 

The Citizenship Program Intern will assist the Citizenship Coordinator with meeting the goals of the citizenship program through recruitment, communication, outreach, and assisting teachers with classes.
Citizenship Program Goals:

  • 25 new students enrolled per class per quarter. To reach this goal: recruit students using flyers, social media posts, videos, booths at events, community outreach, etc.
  • Each student completes at least 32 hours of class time. To reach this goal: call or text each student before their class to remind them. Follow up with students who have missed a few classes to problem solve how we can help them make that up. Keep track of student class hours on our spreadsheet.
  • Each student takes 1 pretest to assess their English language ability before the start of the class & 1 post-test to assess their progress at the end of the class. To reach this goal: Assist with the pre-test during the first day of class and the post-test during the last day of class. For any students who missed the first class or the last class, conduct the pre-test or post-test with them individually outside of class.

What skills will the student gain?

The student will learn about the ins and outs of a local nonprofit as well as valuable skills in research, communication, leadership, and cultural dexterity. Many of our interns find that these skills prepare them to get a job either at our own nonprofit, or another local nonprofit, or a governmental entity. Whatever their future plans, they will bring a new perspective on intercultural connections from working at our agency.

Qualifications: 

  • Interest or passion in helping immigrants and refugees
  • Proficient knowledge of online platforms like Zoom, Microsoft Word, Excel, and Google Suite.

Schedule Expectations for the student:

One or two of your hours will be weekly check-ins and meetings with our staff. Must be available during one of our citizenship classes (T/TH 5:30-7:30pm, or Sat/Sun 10-12pm or 3-5pm, times are subject to change)

2.Internship: Youth Program Intern; Supervisor: Joy Oyebefun

Project Description: 

The goals of the ACCC Youth Program are: 1) Give immigrant and refugee youth opportunities to build relationships with trusted adults; 2) Provide a safe space to express cultural values and traditions and reflect on what culture means; 3) Provide spaces for immigrant and refugee youth to build community with other immigrants from their culture. The Youth Program Intern will:

  • Participate in implementing after school and during school programs for middle school and high school immigrant youth.
  • Engage with youth in prosocial, culturally-sensitive activities and build positive mentor relationships.
  • Support Youth Coordinators by assisting with youth program curriculum development, activity planning, field trips, guest speakers and end-of-semester showcase events.
  • Attend and successfully complete all required training programs, staff meetings and complete all related assignments in a timely manner.
  • Provide accurate and timely reporting of hours, work performed, and outcomes in weekly check-ins and a written report to the supervisor at the completion of project or time served.

What skills will the student gain?

Lancaster Connected- United Way Lincoln & Lancaster County: Lancaster Connected, founded in November 2021, uses a Collective Impact approach to form partnerships for community transformation. The collaborative aims to address complex issues affecting children and families by bringing together diverse organizations to enhance communication, coordination, and efficiency.

Internship: Assistant Coordinator; Supervisor: Kristen Derr

Project Description: 

The position will support the Community Coordinator in leading activities and events that engage the community in efforts to ensure all families have the opportunities they need to raise healthy and thriving families. Students will help with

  • Design posts, graphics, videos, and multimedia content tailored for each platform, ensuring they resonate with the audience.
  • Plan and schedule posts to ensure consistent engagement
  • Run targeted social media ad campaigns and promotions to boost visibility and engagement.
  • Assist in organizing community events, workshops, and meetings to engage target populations.
  • Build relationships with community members, volunteers, and partners.
  • Support grant administration and proposal development

Lincoln and Lancaster County Habitat for Humanity: Lincoln Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit organization dedicated to building homes, communities, and hope. We engage volunteers, donors, and community members in our mission to provide affordable housing solutions for those in need. As a Marketing Intern, you’ll play a key role in sharing our story, growing our community engagement, and supporting impactful events.

Internship: Marketing Intern 

Project Description: 

The Marketing Intern will assist the Development Coordinator in executing key projects that promote Lincoln Habitat for Humanity's mission and programs. This role focuses on developing compelling content for social media, supporting event marketing and planning, producing engaging videos, and creating print materials like mailers and flyers.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Social Media Management:
    • Develop, schedule, and monitor posts for Lincoln Habitat for Humanity's social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn).
    • Create and curate engaging content, including photos, videos, and captions, to enhance follower engagement and promote events.
    • Analyze social media performance metrics and suggest improvements for campaigns.
  2. Marketing Video Production:
    • Assist in planning, shooting, and editing videos that highlight our mission, homeowners’ stories, and events.
    • Develop short promotional videos for social media and event marketing campaigns.
  3. Event Marketing and Support:
    • Support marketing efforts for major events like the Women’s Build, Community Builders Breakfast, and other fundraising and volunteer initiatives.
    • Assist with event logistics, promotional materials, and post-event follow-up.
    • Attend events to capture content and provide on-site marketing support.
  4. Mailer and Flyer Production:
    • Design and produce print and digital materials such as mailers, flyers, and brochures for marketing campaigns and donor communications.
    • Collaborate with the team to ensure messaging is on-brand and mission-focused.
  5. General Marketing Support:
    • Conduct research on marketing trends and provide recommendations for improving outreach.
    • Help maintain the marketing calendar and coordinate with other departments on promotional needs.

Lincoln Parks and Recreation- Aquatics: The Aquatics division of Lincoln Parks and Recreation offers a variety of programs and services focused on promoting water safety, fitness, and recreation for the community. With nine public pools, including aquatic centers, and additional spray ground facilities, we serve residents of all ages throughout the summer months.

Internship: Aquatics Sign Researcher; Supervisor: Kayla Sellhorn

Project Description: 

  • Evaluate and document current pool signs at 9 public pools.
  • Research current aquatic sign trends that meet current aquatic standards as well as community needs.
  • Conduct a comprehensive analysis to identify the primary languages spoken within the community for sign usage.
  • Propose future signs ideas/concepts including a budget.

Lincoln Parks and Recreation- Greenways and Conservation Areas: Greenways and Conservation Areas Lincoln Parks and Recreation Restoring and maintaining natural areas in and around the City of Lincoln. This includes both conservation and recreation aspects including: trail maintenance, plant identification and mapping, invasive species mitigation, prescribed fire planning and execution, trailhead cleaning and mowing.

Project Description

We manage 3,000 acres including Wilderness Park, parts of Pioneers Park, and some areas of the Prairie Corridor on Haines Branch. We start at our Shop in Wilderness Park and may travel to various parts of Lancaster County or even further as we sometimes assist Indian Cave State Park with 100+ acre prescribed burns.

Students will learn:

  • Plant id
  • Which tools to use and how to use them for managing natural/wild areas
  • Basics of fire ecology
  • Invasive species management
  • Parks management
  • Problem solving on the fly in the wilds. 
  • To use a chainsaw, if desired
  • To drive skid steer/tracked steer, 30 and 50 hp tractors, UTVs, heavy duty trucks, riding mowers, etc.

Lincoln Parks and Recreation- Pioneers Park and Nature Center: Pioneers Park Nature Center, part of the Lincoln Parks and Recreation system, is a city-owned resource that provides people of all ages multiple opportunities for outdoor observation, learning, and fun. Since 1963 the Nature Center has served the Lincoln area as an environmental education center and wildlife sanctuary. The Nature Center maintains two exhibit spaces with live animals, taxidermy mounts, art displays, static exhibits, and hands-on activities that help educate and entertain visitors. More than ten miles of hiking trails wind through 668 acres of various habitats and take visitors past non-releasable raptor exhibits and a small herd of bison. Interpretive signs throughout the grounds help orient and educate visitors. The Nature Center employs outdoor educators—who guide activities like nature hikes and day camps—and visitor services workers, who engage and instruct visitors in the exhibit buildings.

Internship: Educational Exhibit Intern; Supervisor: Neal Bryan

Project Description: 

Create and install an exhibit display in one of the educational buildings at the Pioneers Park Nature Center.
Work in partnership with full-time staff to perform the following:

  • Understand the mission and long-term plan of the Pioneers Park Nature Center (PPNC).
  • Identify exhibit topic related to the PPNC mission and long-term plan.
  • Define elements and scope of the exhibit.
  • Research content.
  • Write simple text and create visual and interactive elements.
  • Install the completed exhibit in educational space at PPNC.

Exhibit space ranges from 3' x 4' to 6' x 12'. Exhibits may include such topics as natural history, biology, anthropology, geology, program marketing, or recreation—anything the intern finds interesting and for which they can create a compelling story for their audience, Nature Center visitors.

What skills will the student gain?

Nebraska Department of Transportation: The Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT) is responsible for the planning, development, design, construction, maintenance and administration of the state highway system. The goals of the Department are to preserve the billions of dollars Nebraskans have invested in their state highway system, making the highways safe and efficient, and accomplishing this in a timely and cost-effective manner.

Internship: Project Coordinator; Supervisor: Ryley Egger

Project Description: 

As the project coordinator for the Buckle Up Phone Down initiative, you will help promote NDOT’s initiative to high schools and have them become Buckle Up Phone Down schools. Additionally, you will plan for the Buckle Up Phone Down to engage teenage drivers at the Nebraska High School Basketball Championships. You will help with:

  • Promotional Strategy for the initiative
  • Statistical analysis
  • Conduct in-person marketing

What skills will the student gain?

The successful candidate will gain experience in writing and editing skills for effective promotional strategy. They will also learn how to use excel and build a google map for statistical analysis. Additionally, they will learn how to effective communication skills to conduct in-person marketing. The candidate will gain exposure and understanding how to project management a marketing campaign using state and federal funding as well.

Qualifications: 

  • Communications skills, especially in writing and speaking. 
  • Enjoy finding new marketing ideas and booth designs. 
  • Previous experience with promotions and marketing will be beneficial.

School of Global Integrative Studies: Bringing together anthropology, geography, and global studies, the School of Global Integrative Studies prepares students to excel in an increasingly connected, complex, and ever-changing world. By interweaving the perspectives of anthropology, geography, and global studies, we critically examine diverse problems facing people and the environment to generate new knowledge. We advance understandings of historical and present-day inequities to empower students to be socially responsible citizens and 21st Century leaders.

Internship: Museum Intern in the Eloise Kruger Gallery of Miniatures; Supervisor: Sophia Perdikaris

Project Description: 

To assist with the cataloguing, photography, 3d digitization and conservation of the Kruger Collection miniatures and library. https://krugercollection.unl.edu. The collection consists of more than 20,000 objects out of which we have catalogued only about 2500. The interns will assist with all the processes of cataloguing objects. Doing data entry, photography and learn how to create 360 image scans for the creation of a virtual museum. The interns will also be introduced on how to design and possibly create a miniature exhibit along with participating on a gallery opening. For the spring 2025, the interns will work on individual rooms in a newly donated miniature house. There will be a public opening and a reception to celebrate this new addition to the collection. The theme for the spring 2025 is "Inspired by Eloise".

What skills will the student gain?

Transferable skills, such as organization, planning, technical skills development (such as data entry, 3D digitization), time management, teamwork. The work focuses on museum artifact conservation (basic preservation, including proper handling and storage), cataloguing, documentation procedures, gallery exhibits and exhibit design, photogrammetry and portfolio development. Student interns can expect to learn through this experience from inception to implementation of an exhibit for a diverse audience. Beyond transferable skills it will be an asset in their CV in the event that they are interested in professional placement in galleries, museums or similar settings. Also of interest to architects, interior design majors, graphic design, story tellers, AI enthusiasts, history buffs and miniature enthusiasts. This work requires attention to detail, methodical analysis and specialized handling of small objects, archival books, papers and photographs.

Qualifications: 

  • Multitask and is flexible with the assigned daily tasks. 
  • Working well with others is a must. 
  • While independent thinking is encouraged, following directions is critical.
  • Handling of objects is critical to their safe keeping, curation and preservation. 
  • Pay attention to detail.
  • Exercise caution while working.
  • Always follow oral and written directions for the artifact handling.

The objects are tiny, fragile and centuries old. They cannot be replaced if broken.

Schedule Expectations for the student:

Hours are flexible and we can work around students class schedule. Once the schedule for the internship is solidified, the students will be expected to attend without interruption. If any changes in schedule are required after that, the student needs to obtain prior approval. The students are expected to intern during regular business hours of 8am-3pm.

Sunday's Farmer Market: The Sunday Farmers' Market is an integral part of the community, committed to providing sustainably produced food and fostering a healthy, strong community. Our Micro-Internship & Mentoring Program aims to expand the market's reach and enhance marketing strategies while providing opportunities for students to work in their areas of interest. 

Internship: Graphic Design, Social Media & Videography Intern; Supervisor: Holly Hladik

Project Description: 

Interns will gain hands-on experience in social media marketing, graphic design, videography, and research. They will work on creating content, designing promotional materials, and conducting research. Interns will learn project management, teamwork, and communication skills, and will have the opportunity to build a portfolio of their work.

As a Marketing Intern, you will collaborate with our marketing team on all organizational marketing needs, including the transition to new branding and creation of new campaign materials. You will also collaborate with the events team to assist in the organizing and promotion of National Volunteer Week. Your insightful contribution will help to create successful experiences

UNL- College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources: The University of Nebraska's College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources aims for its students to be exposed to an education that is transformative and allows each student to craft their experience to fit their passions. Internship: Social Media & Community Engagement Intern - Global Engagement; Supervisor: Brianne Wolf

Project Description: 

CASNR is global...but you probably wouldn't know it. That's where we need some help! We are seeking a motivated, curious, open-minded intern who can help us spread the word through social media, design, campus communication and engagement about the global opportunities students have in CASNR, including international coursework and internships, the Sustainable Development Goals Scholars Program, and generally just getting the word out there across campus--CASNR and beyond. 

We are in need of assistance in:

  • Creation of dynamic, compelling social media content, help communicating with campus audiences (through digital media, flyer posting, speaking to RSOs, or other innovative approaches)
  • Help running/hosting global events, attendance and assistance with SDG (Sustainable Development Goals) expert sessions/programming, 
  • Promotion of upcoming events and opportunities (like the upcoming residency of a cohort of entrepreneurs from
    across the Americas), and more.

What skills will the student gain?

Project Description: 

The College of Law hosts a variety of small- and large-scale events each semester. The event planning intern will support the work of the College's event specialist by placing catering orders, helping with event logistics and event set up/cleanup.

Qualifications: 

The ideal candidate will have a positive attitude, be a team player, reliable, adaptable, and a self-starter. The intern will demonstrate professionalism and a compose demeanor. Some exposure to customer service, events or marketing is ideal.

Ideally the intern would be available at least two days a week in the 11-1 timeframe, but all candidates will be considered.
