University of Nebraska-Lincoln Dance Marathon is one of the largest student registered organizations on campus. Every year, we recruit students from all over campus to come together and fundraise for the Children’s Hospital in Omaha. We host small events on campus and within the Lincoln community to integrate all walks of life into our mission of being one generation fighting for the next. The pinnacle of our year is a 13.1 hour “Dance Marathon” where UNL students and kids who have been treated at Children’s Hospital come together to celebrate the money we have raised and dance the night away. We integrate dancing, live acts such as a children’s talent show, crafts and activities for all ages, and even shaving heads for the kids to give families and children affected to have a day without the worries associated with their numerous stays in the hospital.
While our mission predominantly focuses on raising money for Children’s Hospital, Dance Marathon is much more than that. Our mission statement is “building relationships to build DM.” We want to unite a diverse network of students and Nebraska community members by giving them a common goal: serving others. This mindset allows Dance Marathon to provide a community of individuals that are passionate about being a part of a cause greater than themselves.
Dance Marathon has many different levels of involvement, but all are greatly integrated and necessary for our success. The executive team is made up of 21 directors in charge of their respective committees within the organization. These individuals make decisions that enhance all aspects of our mission, from recruitment to event operations. Staff make up each committee and complete various tasks that aid in efforts completed leading up to the event. They staff booths and various events held on campus throughout the year, as well as assisting in accomplishing their committee’s goals to improve DM. Morale Captains act as the liaisons between Dance Marathon and Team Captains of other organizations on campus that support our mission. This group is known to set an enthusiastic tone at Huskerthon and boost morale throughout the event. Dancers are students throughout campus that have raised $100 throughout the year and come together the day of the event to help celebrate the year’s accomplishments. Lastly, donors are individuals that have supported our organization’s goal to raise money for Children’s Hospital in Omaha. All roles allow us to succeed in our goals of fundraising and building relationships throughout our community.
