Camp Counselor

Serves as a Program and/or Cabin Counselor and provides safe, enjoyable and educationally based camping experiences that ensure the purpose, mission and values of the YMCA are being met.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following but may vary dependent upon the needs of the camp, the camp season and the employee’s specific area of responsibility. Other duties within the position may be assigned.

Cabin Counselor

  • Lives in a cabin with and lends leadership and guidance to a cabin group.
  • Helps campers adjust to camp life.
  • Enforces cabin policies/procedures and follows up with positive praise/discipline as appropriate.
  • Implements and enforces health and safety rules, regulations and procedures in accordance with ACA regulation.
  • Develops and conducts cabin activities and programs (vespers, evening activities, cookouts, etc.)
  • Responds seriously and confidentially to suspicious and inappropriate behaviors and follows mandated reporting requirements related to abuse.
  • Performs general housekeeping tasks and maintains cabin area.
  • Maintains and timely submits paperwork and reports as assigned.
  • Receives and carries out instructions.
  • Performs special projects and other related duties as needed or assigned by management.

Program (s) Counselor

  • Lives in a cabin with and lends leadership and guidance to a cabin group.
  • Directly carries out leadership responsibilities to effectively plan and implement programs and oversee, instruct and guide campers involved in these programs (see program specific list below).
  • Implements and enforces health and safety rules, regulations and procedures in accordance with ACA regulation.
  • Communicates supply and equipment needs/repairs to Program Directors.
  • Responds seriously and confidentially to suspicious and inappropriate behaviors and follows mandated reporting requirements related to abuse.
  • Performs general housekeeping tasks and maintains program areas, equipment and buildings.
  • Maintains and timely submits program reports as needed.
  • Receives and carries out instructions.
  • Performs special projects and other related duties as needed or assigned by management.

Program specific duties include but are not limited to:

Wrangler

  • Responsible for the overall health, safety and curriculum of the horse program.

Aquatics

  • Maintains safe swimming conditions and constant surveillance of the pool area. Knows, understands, and consistently applies and enforces safety and pool rules, policies and guidelines.
  • Records and keeps accurate records of all pool chemical readings and takes appropriate action as needed.

Ropes

  • Facilitates the building of communication, cooperation and trust with each group through ropes activities.
  • Ropes Proficiency as required by supervisor.

Health, Medical & First Aid

  • Assists Camp Nurse in carry out the health, medical and first aid needs of camp participants.

Multi-Media Production

  • Captures, edits and produces camp photographs and videos. As needed arranges for additional or special photos/videos for specialty groups.
  • Teaches related activities to campers as needed.

Other

  • Organizes, administers and oversees safe and meaningful programs for campers in: all forms of arts and crafts work,
  • lake activities and small crafts (boating, sailing, canoeing, etc.), nature programs, archery and rifles, the office and store.
  • Assists with the administrative duties in the camp office.
  • Assists with operating the camp store.
  • Works with Food Service staff to implement efficient mealtime procedures that include setup, distribution and cleanup.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • General knowledge of all camp programs, facilities, fees and policies.
  • Ability to read, write, talk, see and hear.
  • Ability to plan and initiate age appropriate games and activities.
  • Ability to teach and provide leadership.
  • Ability to perform multiple tasks at one time.
  • Ability to be creative and resourceful.
  • Ability to drive a 15 passenger van as required for program area.
  • Possesses a strong understanding of the YMCA and its purpose, mission and values. Demonstrates this understanding through behavior and actions that support the purpose, mission and values.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

High School Diploma

Resident camp experience and/or training in related program area.

Previous experience working with children.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

CPR, AED and First Aid Certifications

Valid Driver’s License

Completion of program-specific certifications as needed for program area.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORK ENVIRONMENT

Sufficient strength, agility and mobility to perform essential functions and to supervise and participate in program activities in a wide variety of indoor and outdoor locations (depending upon the programs). Ability to perform moderate physical activity that may include standing, walking, running, crouching, kneeling, bending, twisting and reaching. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs required for some programs.

The nature of the environment is one in which the employee may come in contact with outside weather conditions that may include hot/cold temperatures, rain, wind, insects, chemicals, blood borne pathogens, etc.

Summer Season: Live in summer position requiring extended on duty hours.

Special Events: May require overnight extended on duty hours as needed for event.
