Part-time seasonal position from May thru August as Cook at SOAR Balsam Base in Balsam, North Carolina. The program is designed to work with Learning Disabled and Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder students, ages 8 to 25 years of age.
Responsibilities include: Working directly with the Food Manager, as well as other teammates, to help plan, shop, prepare and serve meals for campers and staff, as well as assist in clean up. Final responsibility regarding kitchen and dining area cleanliness rests with the Cook. The Cook will also coordinate with the Food Manager to maintain kitchen related facilities in a responsible and orderly manner including regular cleaning of all kitchen space and appliances. Finally, it is the responsibility of the Cook to assist the Food Manager to ensure the kitchen, food room, and any other facilities associated with food service meet current health inspection codes.
There will be opportunities to interact with youth during food service as they provide support in a variety of areas. As such, the Cook must be able to promote an experiential learning atmosphere that is conducive to the development of self-esteem and life skills. Interactions with students must be positive and appropriate in tone and content. If there are any issues that arise regarding student behavior, the cook should enlist the Adventure Camp Staff or Course Director to respond to those issues.
Qualifications for the position include: At least 20 years of age; clear background check; understanding of food service needs associated with camps or large groups; an awareness of and commitment to a healthy and nutritional food service plan; experience working with youth; and an ability to follow the SOAR Risk Management plan to provide a standard of care that follows norms set by the profession.
Expectations for the position include: Compliance with all policies and regulations of SOAR and acting in a professional manner at all times. Also, the ability to fulfill the physically demanding requirements of the position including but not limited to: being able to lift up to 50 lbs.; being able to walk up and down steep stairs; standing for long periods of time.
