SUMMARY: Rodale Institute seeks a scientist with expertise in crop and/or weed science to shepherd a new age of regenerative organic no-till farming and crop production. Weed and fertility management in organic systems present the biggest challenges but also the greatest potential to improve soil, environmental, and farm economic outcomes. The Crop/Weed Scientist position will also present data and information through outreach activities, peer-reviewed publications, and support the Rodale Institute education and consultancy programs. This position reports to the Chief Scientist. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:·        Responsible for developing a research program on organic crop and weed management that may include cover crop based no-till and continuous organic no-till farming, integrating crops and livestock, technological adoption, adaptation, and innovation, alley-cropping, inter-cropping, and intensification in regenerative organic systems.·        Oversee current and future field trials.·        Analyze and interpret scientific data.·        Write and manage grants with internal and external partners to advance our understanding of regenerative organic agricultural systems.·        Oversee the timely execution of grant funded projects, including budget management, timeline management, data organization, and instructing field and lab technicians.·        Develop collaborative and productive relationships with internal and external partners.·        Clearly communicate to the general public and scientific community through written and oral communication (e.g. workshops, conference presentations, field days). ·        Write bulletins, fact sheets, articles, and other outreach and education materials.·        Publish peer reviewed articles in professional journals.·        Support the Rodale Institute education and consultancy programs with expertise in crop and weed management. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: ·        PhD in Crop, Weed, or Horticultural Science.·        Minimum of four years in field and laboratory research experience. ·        Proven interest/background in organic and/or regenerative production practices.·        Strong background in statistical analysis of field trial results and demonstrated evidence of publishing in peer-reviewed journals. ·        History of grant solicitation. ·        Interest and ability in working, collaborating, and communicating in a team environment with individuals of diverse backgrounds. DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS: ·        Evidence of attention to detail and ability to develop and maintain high quality records and other documentation is desirable. ·        Self-starter with the ability to prioritize multiple activities. ·        Excellent organizational skills with demonstrated written and oral skills for communicating technical information to farmers and extension personnel. ·        Practical farm experience and familiarity with field scale equipment and crop production. TRAVEL:Some regional and national travel is required. EDUCATION/CONSULTANCY: 20% of effort GRANT WRITING, PROJECT MANAGEMENT, AND PUBLICATION: 70% of effort OUTREACH: 10% of effort OTHER RODALE INSTITUTE EXPECTATIONS:To be trustful and respectful to all staff and visitors.To apply: Please send a cover letter and resume to Elaine Macbeth, Director of Finance/HR, at elaine.macbeth@rodaleinstitute.org.
