Remote Job: On-Camera CS Teacher

We are looking for charismatic individuals to teach AP Computer Science A (Java) and Introduction to Computer Science (Python) in a new series of instructional videos. Individuals from all backgrounds and experience levels are encouraged to apply. This is a remote and paid part-time position.

Project STEM is a nonprofit organization focused on advancing equity in computer science and STEM education by inspiring and empowering PreK-12 students and teachers in schools and districts across the U.S. At the core of our mission is a belief that an understanding and love of computer science and STEM is critical to creating a generation of engaged learners who can change the world.

The position entails recording video lessons for the entirety of the course (either AP Computer Science A or Introduction to Computer Science). The instructor will explain and demonstrate course material, unpack computer science concepts, and code along where necessary. The day-to-day for this position entails recording these videos (explaining concepts, coding along, and providing anecdotes) for each lesson of the course; scheduling is flexible as long as teachers can devote 10+ hours a week to recording.

Our ideal candidate has Java or Python experience, can relate to high school students at a one-on-one level, and is comfortable teaching on camera. We will provide lesson plans and general scripts and talking points. Experience making lesson plans and teaching is not a requirement.

This job requires a minimum of 10 hours per week and will start in early January 2021. Duration of the job depends on the availability of the on-camera teachers, but we estimate it will go through March.

Required:

  • Java or Python experience
  • The desire to engage high school students
  • Ease on camera

To apply, please either submit your resume and email address on Handshake or:

1) Fill out the short form here.

2) Record a one-minute introduction video (instructions below). In this round of videos, we are looking primarily for on-camera presence and the ability to engage high school students in computer science material. Record the video in horizontal orientation – your phone or computer camera will work!

  • In the video, introduce yourself, tell us about one of your first experiences with computer science, and speak to what you like about computer science.
  • Upload your video to YouTube as an ‘unlisted’ video, and then send your resume and the video link to Lillian Bornstein at lillian@projectstem.org. Please include your name and “On-Camera CS Teacher” in your email subject line.
