Phillips Exeter Academy – Exeter Summer 2021

Position: Summer Residential School Teaching Internship

Requirements: Applicants must be a current college junior, senior or graduate student who has a strong interest in teaching the middle school and/or high school level

Dates: Monday, July 5 through Saturday, August 7. (Teaching Interns arrive the week of June 28 for orientation and stay through student departure on August 7)

Stipend: $3,300, plus room and board (living in a student room)

The Teaching Intern Program is coordinated by a team of faculty members who help the Interns explore the complexities of teaching in and beyond the classroom. The Intern program at Exeter Summer is an opportunity to practice the Harkness teaching method, which is a student-directed roundtable discussion. Interns are paired with and led by an experienced faculty mentor who works closely with them, preparing the Intern to co-teach and then to teach on their own by the end of the five weeks, all in a boarding school environment. Interns will practice and strategize about Harkness within the classroom and through many discussions with their mentors as well as in weekly meetings with the Intern Coordinators.

Residential life is a key component to the Intern experience at Exeter Summer. Under the supervision of veteran faculty members, Interns share in overseeing the residential program and live in dormitories (typically in a single student room on a floor occupied by students, and share bathrooms). Interns will become part of a dorm “team” of residential faculty who work together to create a positive experience for students, many of whom have never attended a boarding school. Dormitory responsibilities include working with a small number of advisees, sharing dorm duty on some weeknights and weekends, and establishing an adult living presence in the residence halls. Interns will be assigned chaperoning responsibilities for off-campus excursions and evening social functions. In order to enhance the residential part of the internship, there are weekly Residential Life meetings to reflect upon the dorm experience and what life might be like in a full year boarding school environment.

About Exeter Summer

Exeter Summer brings together a talented, highly experienced group of more than one hundred and seventy women and men to compose the Summer faculty. Many teach at the Academy during the academic year; some come to us from other private schools, public schools, and from colleges or universities.

Our 730 students come from every corner of the globe—more than forty states, Puerto Rico, Washington, D.C., and forty-five foreign nations—for five weeks of academic study, athletics, and exploration that carry participants far beyond the classrooms and the playing fields. Our programs, THE UPPER SCHOOL—comprised of 390 students who have completed grades nine, ten, eleven, or twelve—and ACCESS EXETER®—comprised of 340 students who have completed grades seven or eight—provide a challenging academic curriculum for students. These students embody a rich diversity of language, culture, religion, and race.
