AmeriCorps Wellness Leaders will develop and enhance programs to help youth and their families make positive changes towards implementing healthy habits. AmeriCorps members will help schools learn how to grow, care for and harvest fresh foods; skillfully cook fresh fruits and vegetables; and manage portion control in after-school time settings. Members and youth will learn about the Nebraska food system and careers in agriculture and culinary arts while learning vital leadership skills. Members will serve a minimum of 450 hours, or an average of 15 hours per week. During after-school time members will work with PHL staff to develop programs such as Harvest of the Month, WeCook, Tower Gardens and SPARK at their designated sites. AmeriCorps members will act as the Wellness Leader at their designated site working with the Community Coordinator at each school to establish wellness goals while teaching clubs on healthy foods, physical activity and agriculture education. The AmeriCorps members will learn organizational and leadership skills by leading clubs, developing wellness curriculum schedules, and managing a community public health initiative as well as the value of collaborative partnerships and diverse community engagement to achieve common goals. Wellness Leaders will work with a diverse group of children and families that will allow them to improve communication skills. Members are required to participate in on-going training sessions throughout their service year.
