The Materials and Process Engineering department consists of 10 engineers, 1 technician, 2 summer interns, and one 12-month co-op. As part of the corporate Global Product Development team, we work with all of Oshkosh Corporation’s brands and provide expertise to team members in other engineering disciplines, test and development, quality, purchasing, and manufacturing. We have extensive in-house materials characterization and testing laboratories.
As a Materials Engineering Co-op, you will support engineers in material characterization, failure analysis, material selection, and research projects by means such as the following:
• Maintain clean, organized, and operational laboratory space, equipment, and instruments
• Use tools and equipment to disassemble and section large components/assemblies for analysis
• Section, mount, polish, and etch metallographic samples
• Document and characterize components using photography, microscopy, and fractography
• Perform microstructural interpretation of various metal alloys
• Use material characterization instruments to determine composition of metallic and nonmetallic materials
• Use testing equipment to determine physical and mechanical properties of metallic and nonmetallic materials, including tensile properties and hardness
• Monitor corrosion and environmental exposure testing, evaluate performance of coating systems
• Hands-on experience with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and related analytical techniques (EDS, EBSD)
• Analyze test results and data to determine conformance to industry standards and/or engineering drawing specifications
• Communicate findings orally and through technical report writing
