About us: In recent years, disasters and extreme weather have impacted Nebraskans’ ways of life. For vulnerable populations, facing a disaster or extreme weather event can result in reduced income, limited access to services, and increased stress. The mission of Nebraska Extension is “Helping Nebraskans enhance their lives through research-based education.” We are the public outreach and engagement branch of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and we develop and deliver meaningful educational resources and experiences to people of all ages. We have robust portfolios of projects in agriculture, human sciences, and community development, and we are growing the disaster education portfolio.
About the position: The Disaster Education Weather Ready Agriculture VISTA will manage projects that foster preparedness and resilience in farmers. The VISTA will support the expansion of two projects by developing and implementing strategies for program delivery, evaluation, and to secure program funding. We are looking for someone who is passionate about production agriculture and transforming lives through education. We seek a candidate who has strong communication skills (verbal and written) and experience in grant/technical writing. Our ideal member is ready to tackle exciting challenges, able to think critically and solve problems creatively, able to turn ideas into realities, has a can-do attitude, and likes working independently and collaboratively. The VISTA will work in an engaging educational environment, collaborate with university experts and partners, build their professional network, and participate in professional development to grow and support a useful skillset.
Member duties: The Disaster Education Weather Ready Agriculture VISTA will be a part of our statewide cropping systems program team and will strengthen capacity by expanding our organization’s programs and resources in the disaster education portfolio. The Disaster Education Weather Ready Agriculture VISTA will focus on our Weather Ready Farms (WRF) designation program and our Hail Know initiative. Specifically for WRF, the Disaster Education Weather Ready Agriculture VISTA will create and prepare educational content for a learning management system; develop a project implementation and evaluation plan; and seek external funding to support program expansion. The Disaster Education Weather Ready Agriculture VISTA will also coordinate the development of additional Hail Know outreach resources and develop and execute a social media strategy for the initiative. This position will collaborate with our current partners and explore and develop new partnerships.
