This is a temporary 6-month position.
Duty Station: This position will be located at Fort Wadsworth in Staten Island, New York. Occasional Travel to other units in the Park may be required.
Duties: The Museum Technician will support the work of the Division of Cultural Resource Stewardship at the Park and report directly to the Chief of Cultural Resource Stewardship. The incumbent will assist with work that focuses on the preservation of park’s museum and archive collections. The incumbent will assist with preparation of the annual inventory; catalog museum collections and complete records following established National Park Service procedures; assist with updating various accession records; match field and laboratory notes with related artifacts; sort and clean artifacts as required with guidance; make minor repairs on artifacts with guidance; maintain collection storage and laboratory areas; prepare artifacts for storage following established organizational principles and procedures; make photographic records of objects as required; and monitor the environmental conditions of museum storage areas. Significant time and effort will be spent preparing the annual inventory, cataloging artifacts and completing records in the NPS collection management software system (Re:discovery/ICMS). Exposure to and assistance with other aspects of cultural resource management is included.
Physical Demands: The work is primarily sedentary and performed in an office and/or collection storage area with prolonged work at a computer terminal; periods of prolonged standing, as well as some time spent walking, bending and climbing stairs is anticipated. Heavy items (e.g. boxes up to 50 pounds) are lifted and moved on a frequent basis. Occasional work with materials which are dusty and/or stored with protective chemicals may require the use of dust masks, gloves, or other protective devices. The incumbent may be required to operate a car to access the various park units.
