Summary

The J.R. Simplot Company is a diverse, privately held organization, with roots firmly planted in agriculture and agriculture-related businesses. These endeavors have been around for centuries and will continue to be a vital part of the global economy.

This position will give a student the opportunity to be exposed to the Land & Livestock feedlot operations. The primary focus within this position will be to develop a familiarity with health protocols in order to better care for cattle by working closely with Simplot employees assisting and observing, and feeding and caring for livestock.

Key Responsibilities

General responsibilities include: A rotation through all functions in the feedlot include cattle management and health, receiving and shipping, feeding, milling, and pen maintenance

Time will be spent in the pens on horseback to observe pen riding procedures. Will learn and develop the ability to visually detect sick cattle and proper pen pulls. Assist with pen movements. Develop skills to properly care for work horses.

Spend time in the processing barn observing the work flow and cattle receiving procedures. Learn to operate hydraulic chute and ear tag machines and administer shots, implants and ear tags. Learn both cattle shipping and receiving procedures and develops work and cattle movement scheduling.

Spend time within the cattle hospitals observing health and vaccination protocols. Develop familiarity with care and treatment procedures and learn to implement. Attention is given to recognizing various cattle ailments and best practice treatments through work with consulting veterinarian.

Typical Education

At least a sophomore level student; currently enrolled and pursuing a degree in an Agricultural-related field from a four-year college or university.

Relevant Experience

Some experience in cattle handling, horsemanship, doctoring, and calving is helpful.

Knowledge of Microsoft Excel and Word.
