The Cardiovascular Research Program at Huntington Medical Research Institutes (HMRI) seeks an experienced research investigator with a track record in cardiovascular and myocardial biology.
This position offers outstanding scholarly and scientific opportunity in a collegial and collaborative department at HMRI, as well as other related departments at USC and Caltech. The program is looking for an innovative individual with expertise in the implementation and performance of advanced bench procedures, who will also be responsible for laboratory operations including assuring best practices, supervision of junior lab staff, compliance, ordering, and animal protocol applications. Candidates will work with the PI to support ongoing research projects and will also be supported in advancing their own line of research and independent funding.
Current projects include investigation of new mechanisms and therapies in models of heart attack, heart failure, cardiogenic and hemorrhagic shock, and cardiac toxicology. New pharmacologic therapies that protect the mitochondria during ischemia/reperfusion, remote ischemic conditioning and therapeutic hypothermia are also recent therapeutic areas of focus of the laboratory. In addition, the acute and chronic effects of the now popular electronic cigarette smoke or vaping on the cardiovascular system in normal young versus old hearts, as well as hearts with underlying heart disease will be carefully examined. Furthermore, the effect of pure nicotine on the heart will be studied. Experience in small animal (rats and mice) surgery is a prerequisite. The candidate must have at least one year experience with rat and/or mice surgery including anesthesia, intubation, mechanical respiration, cut downs, catheterization of arteries and veins. Experience with myocardial infarction (heart attack) models, heart failure models and models of shock (cardiac and/or hemorrhagic) is preferred.
Qualified candidates should have a sufficiently established track record demonstrating scholarly attributes to qualify for this appointment. This full-time appointment will be at the Senior Fellow or Instructor level at HMRI, depending on the previous experience of the appointee.
We welcome applications from highly motivated and independent-minded individuals. Candidates must have either a PhD, or MD, or equivalent graduate degree in biology or a related field, have completed a postdoctoral fellowship, and have had experience in collaborative interdisciplinary research as evidenced by either publication record, research projects, or previous positions. Ideally, candidates will have previously published in peer-reviewed, high-ranking journals and may have applied for funding. The candidate must also have effective communications skills and an aptitude for mentoring fellows, residents and students.
