Position Description:The Forest Service is recruiting a Resource Assistant to assist the National Program Manager for Travel, Tourism, and Interpretation for the USDA Forest Service, with occasional assistance to the Chief Landscape Architect. This position is based in Washington, D.C. in the National Forest System Office of Recreation, Heritage & Volunteers Resources, Travel, Tourism and Interpretation Program. Working in the headquarters office of the Forest Service is an exciting experience filled with benefits and challenges. The selected candidate will work on cutting edge issues with diverse staff groups and learn about public policy and public service by helping one of the agency’s national-level programs. The Resource Assistant will be exposed to program development work in travel and tourism, interpretative services, visitor center operations, and public services for recreation and workforce, career and leadership development experiences. Candidates with experience and an interest in outdoor recreation, tourism, and/or community outreach and engagement are encouraged to apply for this 24-week program.Duties & Responsibilities:Specific duties will be to provide quality support to the Program Manager on day-to-day tasks involving program leadership, oversight, and support to the field for interpretive services, travel, and tourism programs. In addition to attending meetings with the program manager and participating in activities and events relevant to this program of work, the Resource Assistant will:Assist in the maintenance of an Interpretive SharePoint site and content for the SharePoint site and mobile tour appTake meeting notes, draft briefing papers, and create PowerPoints and graphics for presentations and dissemination of program informationCollaborate with others within the Forest Service to support program activities and the Forest Service mission to sustain the health, diversity, and productivity of the Nation’s forests and grasslands to meet the needs of present and future generations.Occasional work to assist the Chief Landscape Architect of the Forest ServiceOther duties as assigned by the program managerQualifications:Recent graduate or graduate student preferred for full-time workMajor or minor in Recreation, Tourism, Landscape Architecture or other related fieldThe ideal candidate is web savvy and has experience with developing web content and content for social media accounts including Twitter, Facebook, and InstagramDemonstrate exceptional oral and written communication skillsDemonstrate excellent attention to detail, problem-solving and organizational skillsMust be comfortable in a fast-paced, deadline-oriented environment; be able to manage time while remaining responsive to emailsUS citizenship or permanent residency. Interns must undergo a government background check if selectedBenefits:$12.50/Hour$1,000/month Housing StipendOption for health insurance coverage during full-termUp to $5,000 available for Forest Service work travel, orientation, trainings, professional development opportunities that align with RA role and goalsDirect Hire Authority Eligibility – after completing minimum of 960 hours, DHA status provides special non-competitive hiring status when applying for Forest Service positions*This is a 1099 position. Persons paid on a 1099 basis are independent contractors and are self-employed. Independent contractors are required to pay all self-employment taxes (Social Security & Medicare) as well as income tax.
