Great Oaks Fellows are integral members of the Great Oaks community. Over the course of the school year, Great Oaks Fellows collaborate with diverse stakeholders to instruct and mentor students, and help develop a community where Great Oaks students thrive.
As members of the Great Oaks Fellowship, Fellows are directly responsible for providing individualized instruction, mentorship, and enrichment opportunities to several small groups of middle or high school students each day. This is a half-time (900 hours) AmeriCorps service position. Fellows serve Monday-Friday and some weekends- an average day lasting 9 hours.
To ensure that members meet the necessary living expenses incurred while participating in the Great Oaks Fellowship program, members are provided a modest living allowance and access to health coverage. Additionally, Fellows receive professional development throughout the service year. Fellows will also be eligible for a Segal Education Award through AmeriCorps upon successful completion of the service term in good-standing with the service site (completing 900 hours of service for Half-time members and the service term in its entirety). Most importantly, Great Oaks Fellows gain valuable professional and personal experience and acquire skills in civic-engagement, teamwork and leadership during the service term.
The ideal candidate for the Great Oaks Fellowship is a recent college graduate who is passionate about service and working with youth. Great Oaks is seeking individuals who are team-oriented, student-centered, and community-minded. Great Oaks Fellows serve remotely with Great Oaks Legacy Charter School- Newark.
Instruct for Mastery – Fellows deliver virtual small-group instruction to students in the context of a supportive relationship, resulting in a significant increase in math and ELA achievement.
- Provide daily virtual tutoring to students in math and/or English Language Arts for an average of four (45-75 minute) periods a day
- Utilize at least one planning period each day to organize, adapt, and/or plan instructional materials/tutorial coursework
- Submit tutorial coursework weekly
- Provide additional academic supports during after-school programming and on some scheduled Saturdays
- Collaborate with teachers to support individualized and student-driven academic and behavior goal setting
- Actively participate in student and/or content-focused meetings with Fellow leadership, school leadership, and teachers
- Regularly assess student progress to inform personalized instruction
- Provide in-class support to a designated teacher including but not limited to supporting with breakout sessions, small group instruction, grading, etc.
Mentor for Leadership – Fellows provide fundamental support to students’ social emotional growth. Fellows help empower students to evolve into leaders.
- Mentor small groups of students in formal and informal settings
- Collaborate with school staff to support students’ individualized learning needs
- Consistently serve as a model of professional behavior for students
- Ensure students’ continued demonstration of school-wide values and culture systems
- Support students to set self-directed social emotional goals
- Cultivate relationships with families through weekly communication, ensuring open conversations about student progress
Develop a Community – Fellows will contribute to the development of the school and surrounding communities.
- Support the development of an enriching school environment by being present for all virtual events and activities and generally being an active member in the school community
- Learn and acclimate to the Great Oaks school culture and procedures, hold students accountable to expectations when necessary
- Actively engage in professional development sessions and submit assignments as necessary that are focused on student instruction (tutorial), mentoring and coaching techniques, student data, personal development, diversity and inclusion, etc.
- Plan and support virtual student and family events
- Participate in Martin Luther King Jr. National Day of Service
- Lead and support after-school programming
- Effectively collaborate with a team of Fellows to achieve the Program’s mission
- Actively participate in weekly coaching sessions
- Submit video of tutorial sessions for the purpose of evaluation, feedback and goal setting
Note: Additional responsibilities may be established by school leadership in collaboration with network leadership
- Completed a Bachelor’s degree by August 1, 2020
- Citizenship or legal Permanent Residency status in the United States (AmeriCorps requirement)
- Served no more than three previous AmeriCorps service terms (AmeriCorps National requirement)

Successful candidates for remote service possess the following:
- Comfort in learning and using digital tools and technology
- Reliable and secure equipment
- Familiarity with video conferencing tools and learning management systems (preferred)
- Must be available between 7:15AM- 5:15PM (EST)- this position requires full-time availability
- Participation in school-wide events outside of the hours listed above may be required
This AmeriCorps service role will start in November 2020 and run through May 2021. Remote GO Fellow positions are available for our Newark, NJ campus.
