SUMMARY

Gann Academy seeks a motivated fluent American Sign Language teacher for the 2021-2022 school year. Candidates should have the capacity to design and implement an effective, student-centered elective course on an Introduction to ASL at the high school level. Since our world language programs emphasize both linguistic and cultural proficiency, the ideal candidate should have a deep understanding of American Sign Language and Deaf culture.

This is an in-person, part-time position teaching one class for the Fall and Spring semesters for the 2021-2022 school year. The salary is $10,000 per semester.

Gann Academy faculty are active members of the school community who are committed to collaborating and growing in their teaching practice, supporting diverse learners in the classroom, connecting with students outside the classroom, supporting other faculty and staff members, and who can self-reflect on their own practice. Commitment to professional development, growth, and collaboration are imperative to be a successful member of the Gann faculty.

All the duties, responsibilities, and activities described are appropriate for part time faculty within the established hours and regular schedule for the position. Any changes will be determined with the supervisor or Assistant Head of School for Teaching and Learning.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Teaching Duties:

  • Teach one section per semester: 3 morning blocks and 2 afternoon blocks per week
  • Prepare lessons and develop curriculum; teach, lead, and guide students
  • Manage student behavior
  • Grade student work in a timely manner consistent with school standards
  • Utilize technology and other educational tools to support student learning and engage in curricular and other initiatives as implemented by the Educational Administration;

LANGUAGE SKILLS

  • Must be proficient in English to carry out work as assigned.
  • Must be fluent in American Sign Language.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Physical demands include dexterity for office machine/supply operation including but not limited to computer, telephone, electronic calculator, copy machine, and printers. Stooping, bending, and reaching for files or supplies, and sitting or standing for extended periods of time are common.
