Reports to: Manager of Family and Early Learning Programs; Manager of Access Programs

Department: Education

Classification: Full-time, Non-Exempt

Term: August 30, 2021–August 12, 2022

Compensation: $13.50/hour (approximately $23,500)

Benefits: Full benefits including medical and dental insurance and paid personal, holiday, and sick time

Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 9:00 am – 5:00 pm, with occasional evening and weekend programs required, 35 hours per week

Format: In-person and/or hybrid, depending upon the status of the pandemic

Scope of Position

The intern will assist in the research, planning, and implementation of art programs and materials for children, families, and visitors with special needs. The intern will receive practical exposure to art museum education, including teaching a variety of visitors in the galleries, schools, and at off-site care facilities; developing art-making activities for visitors of all ages and abilities; and creating self-guided materials. The intern will work with the supervisors to develop and lead a class, a First Tuesday program, or a Summer Art Camp and/or lead content creation for online educational activities and resources.

Internship Goals

  • Expand art historical object-based research skills
  • Learn specific teaching strategies for working with early learners, families, teens, and visitors with disabilities
  • Learn how to create, organize, facilitate, and lead programs in a museum and in community settings
  • Grow skills in gallery teaching, public speaking, and customer service
  • Gain experience with writing in a museum context, including lesson plans and other interpretive resources
  • Develop professional communication and interpersonal skills through collaboration with museum colleagues
  • Understand the relationship between all the departments within the Dallas Museum of Art and how they function together to comprise the organization

Requirements

  • Completion of at least an undergraduate degree in art history, art education, or studio art prior to the start of the internship in August 2021
  • Valid driver’s license required
  • Ability to lift 25 lbs
  • Strong customer service and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to speak throughout the duration of a program without accommodation
  • Proficiency in Spanish encouraged
