OVERVIEW OF PROGRAMS AND ROLE

CivicSpark is a Governor’s Initiative AmeriCorps program where Fellows focus on planning and policy support to build local government capacity to address resilience challenges and create lasting impact in California, Washington, and Colorado communities.

CivicSpark Fellows will focus on projects in partnership with local governments such as:

  • Climate mitigation, adaptation, and decarbonization
  • Water policy and management
  • Affordable housing and sustainable mobility
  • Rural broadband
  • Equity and environmental justice

While projects vary, Fellows can expect to work on a range of tasks including meeting facilitation, community outreach, data collection and analysis, and report writing. Fellows will also have the opportunity to work on volunteer engagement projects, as well as attend regular training to build professional and technical skills. Fellows will complete their service year with an understanding of working with local governments as well as experience in using key sustainability and water management tools.

Fellows are spread regionally throughout California, Washington, and Colorado. Each region has a Regional Coordinator who oversees the various Fellows in their area, providing guidance, mentorship, and support for the Fellows’ professional development goals. Site Supervisors are the Fellows’ on-site contact at their placement site, who works with Fellows on a day-to-day basis and provides assistance on project work and supporting the Fellows’ professional growth in the workplace.
