We are Animating History and we make award winning films based on REAL people from the past. Our current film, The Bell Affair, will be released on VOD soon. We use 3d characters and real actors to make our films. Want to help us out? Great! The visual effects (VFX) department of Animating History is seeking UCARE students to learn all phases of production. For example, you might be a fashion student who wants to learn to make costumes in Clo3D. You may be an Emerging Media Arts student who wants to learn compositing and filmmaking. Maybe you are a history student interested in historical story telling. We have a job for students in all areas of our production. Because we are interdisciplinary, the skills learned on our projects transfer to a variety of disciplines.
Potential Student Tasks:
- 3D clothing design in Clo3D
- 3D architectural modeling in Blender
- 3D environment design in Unreal Engine
- Historic research for clothing and material culture
- Editing and compositing in After Effects and Premier Pro
Student Qualifications:
Digital literacy and organization is required. Applicants can have some experience with digital software however you do not need to know everything. Instead you must be open to learning through testing and prototyping. Students must think critically about how they represent other people through clothing, narrative, and the moving image.
Interest in telling the real stories of enslaved people and families in America. Students must have ability to think critically about how they represent the past through material culture research. Digital literacy and organization is required. Students who are comfortable trouble shooting, testing, and recording results are encouraged to apply.
Training, Mentorship, and Workplace Community:
We have a big team from a current sophomore in History all the way up to senior faculty. Each play a critical role in how our films are produced. However, this position is on our VFX team and you can expect to work closely with me, Michael Burton, Jo Sayer, our current UCARE student, Asper Gurr, our First Year Research Experience (FYRE) student, and Tina Shtabi our current graduate student. We will provide you with critical training on specific aspects of production that relate to your major. The training will give you the opportunity to explore the technology and learn how to apply these skills to your own directed project. You’ll get to play around with the technology too. That is why we use free software. So you can work on your own laptop. We will meet weekly, together, for a couple hours then you will work independently.
