Job Summary:
Undergraduate Laboratory Assistant (a.k.a. Entropy Manager) in the Roston lab is responsible for helping our lab maintain a clean and organized environment by efficiently managing dishwashing tasks using a commercial dishwasher, ensuring proper sterilization of reagents and waste using an autoclave, maintaining safety records, and actively engaging in shadowing opportunities to learn and acquire various laboratory techniques. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, diligent, and has a strong interest in scientific research and laboratory operations. Because we work on plants, preference will be given to applicants with experience or interest in working with plants.
Expectations:
Spend 6 hours per week on maintenance tasks. Must be able to spend 3 hours at a time. Spend additional time at the discretion of the employee to learn lab techniques, up to 15 hours per week. All necessary training is provided, can start work this summer. Applications will be reviewed only after the deadline has passed.
Responsibilities:
1. Dishwashing:
- Operate a commercial dishwasher to effectively clean and sanitize laboratory glassware, equipment, and utensils.
- Organize and store clean dishes in designated locations.
- Monitor inventory of glassware and other supplies required for dishwashing and communicate any shortages or dishwasher breakages.
2. Sterilization:
- Operate and maintain autoclave equipment to sterilize reagents, laboratory waste, and other materials as per established protocols.
- Adhere to safety protocols and guidelines when handling hazardous materials.
3. General Laboratory Support:
- Logging eyewash flushes weekly.
- Assist with general laboratory maintenance tasks such as restocking supplies, organizing workspaces, and disposing of waste.
- Follow standard operating procedures (SOPs) and safety protocols to maintain a safe and compliant laboratory environment.
- Collaborate with other lab members to ensure smooth workflow and efficient lab operations.
3. Lab Technique Shadowing and Learning:
- Actively participate in shadowing opportunities with senior lab personnel.
- Maintain a strong willingness to learn and engage in continuous professional development.
- Ask questions and seek clarification when necessary to enhance understanding of laboratory operations.
Qualifications:
- College student.
- Excellent time management and prioritization skills to efficiently complete assigned tasks.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to maintain cleanliness and organization in a laboratory setting.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Willingness to learn and adapt to new techniques and procedures.
