How did you gain experience when you were a student?
As a college student I was heavily involved in student organizations. This helped me get out of my comfort zone, gain leadership skills, and make connections on campus . I joined a Latina based sorority, known as Lambda Theta Nu Sorority, Inc. and took leadership roles within that organization. I also was part of the executive team for the Multicultural Greek Council on campus where I worked closely with other student leaders. These experiences allowed me to gain confidence when making connections on or off campus as well as develop a professional work ethic that I now carry on to my career.
How did you become a career development professional?
As a First-Gen, non-traditional, and transfer student, college was always an adventure for me. I started my college education at Central Community College (CCC) with a specific major in mind and knowing that I wanted to help people, however after going through some time of career exploration I decided to transfer to a four year institution to pursue a degree in Psychology at the University of Nebraska Omaha. My goal has always been to help people, so I decided to take my Psychology major into and an advising and counseling role, so I continued my education and completed my masters in Higher Education Student Affiars from the University of Nebraska at Kearney. Now, I get to work with college students in their career development and help them make informed decisions about their career pursuits.
Who is someone who impacted your career development?
My former Human Services Instructor at CCC, Janice Hill is a person who impacted my career development. She was the first person in my educational journey who believed in me, in my strengths, qualities, and goals. She saw something in me that noone else saw and motivated to pursue my educational goals. I met her through an elective course, it was through that course that I was introduced to the concepts of counseling, human services, and working with diverse populations and I love it. I am very much grateful to her for all the support and advice that she continues to give me.
